The Turkey Bowl was originally sailed at Monmouth Boat Club in the Penguin fleet. After the decline of the fleet at Monmouth the trophy was transferred to Metedeconk River where it continued in the Penguin Fleet for several more years. After the decline of the Penguins at Metedeconk, the tradition was continued by the sanderling fleet, and joined by the sandpiper fleet in 2006.

The event is a one weekend series after the end of the normal season, followed by a home cooked turkey dinner for the sailors and friends. The keeper trophies consist of a small silver bowl with a turkey mounted in the bottom.
